Napa Valley Creates Wine Stained Lips

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

The Wine Country of Northern California is a destination for wine connesuirs from all throughout the nation and around the globe. Napa, Sonoma, and Calistoga offer visitors a magnificent vacation experience with the laid back mind-set of Northern California. From the romantic bed and breakfast tour to the exhilaration of winery tours for the wine connesuir, the Wine Country is really a fabulous destination.

The area has definitely been built on the wine industry’s success. In 1975, Napa Valley had about 20 wineries. Today visitors can choose between an extraordinary 275. Nearly all of these wineries offer tours and tastings and many are open to the public daily. The Wine Country continues to grow and to draw visitors who are interested in the finest wines that California has to offer.

The city of Napa is the largest in the valley and has all of the amenities someone might be expecting from a city of its magnitude. There is mainstream shopping and several options for visitors needing to have a fitting base of operations in the valley. Prices for vacation rentals and hotels are usually less in Napa than beach rentals directly on the coast line. The disadvantage is that the city is less refined and definitely more mainstream than the rest of the valley’s wine areas, but the proximity to the rest of the valley might make that a minor price to pay.

If you are looking for something different, then Calistoga should be on your list of destinations. The town is decorated with false fronted shops in the style of the Old West. There are authentic 19th century hotels and fabulous opportunities for visitors looking for bed and breakfast inns in the wine country. The fine dining found elsewhere is replaced by unpretentious cafes and a casual attitude that permeates the town. The town was founded as a resort destination, and some of the original hotels and hot springs are still in operation. This is definitely the place for visitors who are interested in the Wine Country but also have a desire to see Northern California the way that it once was.

Another 19th century creation, and the oldest town participating in the Wine Country, is Sonoma, California. There are a variety of attractions here and a lot of of them are unrelated to the food and wine culture of the surrounding area. There are parts preserved from the Spanish Mission era, 19th century adobes, old hotels, and even a theater preserved from the 1930s. Sonoma is definitely an excellent place to find vacation rentals to set up your base of operations, though there are amazing hotels and a variety of bed and breakfasts here as well. Find time for a stop in the city’s central plaza to catch sight of what real life is like for locals of the California Wine Country.

I Wanna See You In The Colorado Mountains

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

You could easily spend a lifetime just exploring the Centennial State’s scenic mountain country, which features a plethora of spectacular vistas teeming with wildlife, world class hunting and fishing, and historic mining towns with quaint Victorian inns or bed and breakfasts. Long term cabin rentals are ideal bases of operation for your family’s Colorado vacation. The Rockies offer something for everyone, from outdoors enthusiasts to history buffs.

Start your tour of America’s Alps in the town of Durango, nestled in Colorado’s southwestern corner. In the winter, the visitor has their choice of five different ski resorts within an hour’s drive. In the summer, there is an almost inexhaustible number of activities in and around the community, including hiking, backpacking and mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking and golf. Rail fans will enjoy riding the Durango & Silverton Railway, one of the last two remaining lines of the old Denver & Rio Grande narrow gauge railroad. Powered by steam locomotives and featuring both open cars and antique rail coaches from a century ago, this is an actual operating railroad that during the winter is the only way to get in and out of Silverton to the north.

Traveling over the San Juan mountains, on the “Million Dollar Highway”, along the Rio de las Animas Perdidas, literally meaning “River of Lost Souls”, you will encounter most historic mining towns that include Silverton, Telluride, Ouray and Ridgway. At Montrose, you will need to cut over to the east on U.S. 50, skirting the southern edge of Gunnison National Forest in order to visit Gunnison and Salida, which is home to one of the oldest whitewater kayaking events in the country, the FIBArk Race, which is the “weekend that Salida comes out to play,” held in June during the spring runoff.

It is difficult to pick one place in Colorado’s mountain country that stands above the rest but the Rocky Mountain National Park and nearby Estes Park in the north central part of the state are definitely front runners. Take advantage of local cabin rentals, or stay at the historic Stanley Hotel, where novelist Steven King got the inspiration for The Shining. Founded by a settler from Missouri in 1859, Estes park is situated along the Big Thompson River, and is the gateway to the national park located just a few miles west.

You can ride along U.S. 34, the Trail Ridge Road, which has the distinction of being the highest continuous highway in the country. This vivid drive will lead you to an altitude of over 12,000 feet above sea level and some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in North America, if not the world.

Of course, Colorado is the West, and that means cattle drives and horses. Well, the grand cattle drives are long over and were primarily in the level eastern portion of the state, but you and your family can experience some of it at one of the area’s various “dude ranches”. Even with the great quantity of highways and jeep trails, there’s no better method to see this part of Colorado than from horseback.

You Can Slow It Down In Naples

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Along the southern Gulf Coast of Florida, tourists will locate Naples, a quaint city that is a bastion of class, elegance, and outdoor activities. The town’s personality has two separate faces, and yet they work in magnificent harmony. On one hand, Naples is a city loaded with galleries, high-end boutiques, and bistros that can rival the finest in the nation. On the other hand, Naples is a relaxed and welcoming fishing town, enamored of outdoor sports and a laid-back lifestyle.

The city was founded in 1880 by a group of real estate investors who bought 8,700 acres on the beach and began selling lots. A 16 room hotel and a pier were built by the designers and soon played host to the rich and famous from all throughout the United States, including the sister of then-President Grover Cleveland. These days, several historical buildings are quaint bed and breakfasts.

The fishing in Naples is some of the best on the Gulf Coast. The mild waters of the Gulf of Mexico present opportunities for sport fishermen year-round. Offshore fishing in the open waters or a leisurely day on the marshy backwaters are equally worthwhile. Guides and charter vessels are obtainable and plentiful in Naples, but visitors can feel free to discover the coastline on their own. Tackle shops, boat rental companies, and marinas are accessible for vessel and equipment rental, or just counsel on the best local fishing spots.

Boat charters are available in full or half day varieties, and many vessels including the Lady Brett and the Captain Paul go on half-day excursions and grant rod, reel, bait, and a fishing license for guests who are more budget-conscious.

Those who favor fishing without a boat can find a tranquil place along the rivers or canals that flow through the city, and pier fishing is not to be missed. The pier has tables for cleaning, and bait is on hand from any of the local marinas or sport fishing shops.

No matter what your chosen fishing technique, fly, spin, plug or bait, Naples, Florida provides an extraordinary opportunity to fish in unspoiled natural environs.

If not everyone in your group is as excited about fishing as you, it may be noted that the seashores at Naples are a few of the best on the Gulf Coast. Part of this has to do with geography. Throughout a large amount of Florida, the best sand is found on the outer surface of the barrier islands, but at Naples, there are no barrier islands between the town and the open sea. This means that amazing white sand is only a stroll away from your beach rental and the lively shopping, excellent restaurants, or any of the additional interests that Naples has to offer.

What To Expect From A Hotel Management Career

Monday, June 28th, 2010

If you’re trying to decide on a career that will give you a secure future and transferable skills, you may benefit from a hotel management career. Among the various skills you will acquire through such a career are management, event organizing, and catering. You can develop business and finance experience as well as people skills that will stay with you no matter what you end up doing in life.

There are a number of different kinds of managers in hotel and lodging management. General managers are what most people think of first. Their parameters may be set by the owner of the hotel or the hotel chain’s execs, but the general manger’s authority can cover the setting of prices, setting up budgets and allocating funding to various departments, and setting standards for the quality of service.

Resident managers are another type, and by definition they live in the hotel. Along with the luxurious lifestyle of living in a hotel, if you become a resident manager it’s your responsibility to respond to emergencies. For the most part, you can expect a typical forty hour week, but you must be prepared to be inconvenienced at odd hours occasionally.

Another type of manager is the manager of the front office. In this position, you would be required to look after matters concerning the front desk. This typically includes assigning rooms, check-ins and check-outs, and setting up reservations. Training and monitoring the front desk staff, adjusting customers’ bills, and handling customer complaints are also part of the job.

Another position is assistant managers. As assistant manager, it would be your job to assist the general and resident managers in taking care of the hotel’s daily operations. You could expect to take care of operations in a combination of the following areas, but not necessarily all of them: accounting, paperwork, hiring, managing the staff, marketing, sales, purchasing, security, maintenance, and recreational facilities.

One of the high pressure but often rewarding positions is manager of convention services. It is not uncommon for hotels to host conferences, special events, and business or fan conventions. In this position, it would be your responsibility to communicate with the client company to arrange rooms and schedule conference rooms. Convention service managers are present at the event so that they can be physically available to solve any problems that may arise.

As you begin to apply for jobs in hotel management, you will find that employers are increasingly looking for candidates with experience and education in hotel management. You can find hotel and restaurant management programs in vocational and technical schools, or by way of adult education programs. It is also possible at many schools to earn a number of degrees in hotel management. Such programs include education on a number of topics including housekeeping management, computer skills pertaining to things like making reservations, billing, finance, accounting, advertising, catering and food services.

From event planning, customer service and business experience to restaurant management and more, a management hotels career can prepare you for all kinds of areas you may engage throughout your life.

Ensure A Worry-free Break: Plan Beforehand

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Most of us can only afford one vacation each year. You need to make sure you plan out every step of the trip and every detail so you can really enjoy yourself. The first step is deciding upon the specific type of hotel you want to spend your vacation in. This will impact your trip significantly. You can book a boutique, resort, hotel, or motel. Each type of place has different amenities and a different purpose.

Hotels are often found in downtown areas that cater to businesses. The hotels offer easy access for business travelers and are frequently within walking distance of upscale eateries and entertainment locales.

If you are looking for excellent amenities and a luxurious experience, you should probably book a reservation with a resort hotel. Typically, these types of hotels are located near attractions like the beaches or mountains. They focus on individuals who wish to experience nature in a luxurious setting.

You can also choose to stay in a boutique hotel. These hotels offer visitors a comfortable stay, but they are probably not going to be as opulent as the resorts. You might find that boutique hotels are themed. These hotels are typically not as large and cost less than do resort hotels.

You will get better service and the staff will be on more personal terms with you than at a resort.

If your length of your trip is short, then you will likely want a motel. Typically motels are located on highways and other thoroughfares frequented for travel. Motels do not offer many luxuries. They are a very practical means of travel, but their rates are the most reasonable. Motels are the equivalent of a chain restaurant. You go there because it is comforting and you know what to expect.

Selecting which lodging you will need depends of the type of trip you are planning. If you are interested in relaxation and looking for some pampering, you may wish to stay in a hotel, as oppose to using a motel, which is usually intended for someone only needing to stay one night and then continues traveling.

Do some research about the types of lodging along your route and destination. Understanding the differences between each type and knowing what you want will help you select the best option suited to you.
