The southernmost animal that has ever been known to live is the tiny pink mite native to Antarctica/ This little critter that looks a lot like a spider likes to eat algae and fungi. An entomologist from Hawaii recently discovered this mite only 309 miles from the South Pole. This same scientist also found lichens only 266 miles from the Pole. Picture yourself in a jumbo jet as you pass over the South Magnetic Pole – the compass needle behaves erratically, no longer able to point to the north. A far distance below the cozy flight, the sea of ice is carved into waves by strong, unforgiving winds rocketing to the coast.
