Anaheim’s Cornucopia Of Attractions

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Anaheim, California is one of the best locations for a family vacation that exists in the United States. With an array of activities for young and old, the region offers fun and excitement for all members of your family. Whether you’re planning a family getaway or a romantic retreat, this Orange County gem will surely give you just what you’re looking for.

Perhaps the best-known attraction in all of Anaheim is Disneyland. This is one of the top reasons Anaheim is a prime family destination spot. Children long for the experience, and adults can feel like kids again when they visit Disneyland. But the theme park is only one among many activities for you to enjoy with your family.

Just a short drive from Anaheim, you’ll find Newport Beach, one of the best locations for whale watching in the world. Various whales of many species pass through the waters off the coast of California throughout the year. Newport Beach is only a short jaunt from Anaheim and gives you the opportunity to see whales, dolphins, and sea lions in their natural habitat.

Dana Point is another prime spot for whale and dolphin viewing. Dana is also a common destination for those interested in sport fishing. Dana Point is less than a 40-minute drive from Anaheim and can be a great day trip for you and your loved ones while visiting Orange County.

If you’re looking for other day activities for the family to enjoy together, you should consider the Flightdeck Air Combat Center. The center offers the chance for civilians to climb into the cockpit of fighter jets. Flight simulators allow you to experience the realistic thrill of piloting an F-16 for anywhere between 40 and 70 minutes. Guests not participating in fight simulation can comfortably enjoy the show via video monitors from the Officers Club at the center. Reservations are required, and booking in advance of your trip allows you to take advantage of the occasional price discounts offered by the center.

For those interested in the performing arts, Anaheim offers a wide variety of live performances and musical arrangements. Theater performances include those hosted by the Orange County Center for the Performing Arts. Broadway-style shows, magic acts, and other events are held regularly at the center and tickets can be obtained in advance of your trip to Anaheim.

Smaller plays are held at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. Other programs are available at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center, and the drive between Anaheim and Long Beach is short and enjoyable. Enjoy a play, musical, or dance performance at any of these venues, and make memories to treasure for years to come.

You may be interested in planning your trip during the Orange County Fair. A trip to Southern California during the fair promises many family activities. The fair has all the trappings of a small county fair only with larger flare and style. Events include magic performances, live music, dancing, and great fair foods.

If you’re a sports fan you may want to catch a game or check out a practice session while in Anaheim. Catch a baseball game at Arrowhead Pond or Angel Stadium. Or take in a Ducks’ hockey game in Anaheim. The Honda Center is another prime spot for finding a game.

The Honda Center hosts many performances throughout the year as well. From pop, rap and rock concerts to ice dancing and skating shows, there is always something going on at the center.

Anaheim is within a day’s drive of many other Southern California locations. You may decide that Los Angeles is the order of the day. Or perhaps you’re interested in seeing Hollywood. Regardless of where you make your daytrip plans, you’ll find you can easily rent a car, enjoy a leisurely drive to a big city, and take in some of the activities offered there as well.

If you’re looking for a night of fun on the town, Anaheim has many enjoyable bars, clubs and restaurants. Dinner on the town with your family can be a nice, quiet way to spend the evening. Or you may decide that a show at Disneyland sounds like fun.

For those without small children, you may be interested in stopping in a few of the better bars in the greater-Anaheim area. The Anaheim GardenWalk is a great place for nightlife, featuring casual bars, modern dance clubs, and tons of restaurants. It can be a perfect place for you and your spouse to spend a night out alone during your vacation.

3 San Diego Airport Hotels That Don’t Smell Like Pee

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

If you’re like me, the term airport hotel usually conjures images of overpriced rat -raps that have all the charm of an Eastern Bloc ministry building.

And while “america’s finest city” does have a dingy places to rest your head, the smart traveler will head out to nearby Harbor and Shelter island for a great hotel near the San Diego airport.

Here are 3 hotels near the San Diego airport that are not only convenient–but also full of luxurious ameneties.

San Diego Travel Tip No.1: Sheraton San Diego Hotel

Just five minutes from the airport and downtown, and decorated with a fresh and contemporary style, this two-towered Harbor Island hotel might just be the best San Diego airport hotel available.

Of the two towers, the West–with its large conference rooms–is ideal for biz travelers. The bigger East tower has a ton of sports eqiupment/facilities to help you work up a sweat.

But both towers have stunning views, especially in the upper floors, of the bay and downtown skyline.

San Diego Travel Tip No.2: Humphrey’s Half Moon

If tiki torches and palm trees is your idea of luxury than this South seas-themed resort on Shelter Island is your perfect destination.

And the harbor views might be the most beautiful part of San Diego. The indoor furnishings won’t blow your socks off, but the open grassy areas are perfect for grabbing a margarita and just chillin’.

Yet it’s the nightlife of Humphrey’s that most people know this resort for. (I’ve lived here for 10 years and some of the best concerts I’ve seen were at Humphrey’s.)

And if you want to grab a martini before heading out for some nightlife, stop by the jazz lounge for an awesome chill atmosphere. Also, for you foodies the on-site seafood place has some of the best food you’ll ever get from a hotel.

San Diego Travel Tip No.3: Marriott Hotel and Marina

Most travelers looking for great San Diego airport hotels are generally in town for business. So if you’re in town for one of the many conventions–like my favorite comic-con–and looking for hotels near San Diego convention center, one of the best spots you can end up is the Marriott on Harbor dr.

I know.. Marriott…how boring. But this twin-tower establishment has every amenity the savvy biz traveler is looking for. And when the convention has you feeling haggard, chill out amongst the waterfalls and lagoon-shaped pools.

And if you’re looking for some downtown shopping, the boutique outdoor mall, Seaport Village, is just a few feet away. And with a trolley station within walking distance, you can get anywhere in San Diego in a matter of a few minutes.

The Blue Whale - The Largest Animal That Ever Lived

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Blue Whales are magnificent creatures. One of the very best places to view them is on a boat from Southern California. Whale watching trips go out regularly from San Diego, Los Angeles, Oxnard, Ventura and Santa Barbara.

Blue Whales are the biggest animals ever to live on the face of the earth ” much larger than the largest dinosaurs that roamed the earth 200 million years ago. These mega-whales have have been scientifically weighed at nearly 200 tons - an amazing ten tons more than a DC-10 commercial airliner. By comparison, the largest elephants only weigh about six tons - 30 times less than a Blue Whale! Scientists have measured Blue Whales at more than one hundred feet long where by comparison the largest dinosaur skeletons you will find in museums are no more than 90 feet long.

A common myth is that the heartbeat of these magnificent creatures can be heard twenty miles away. Not only is that not true, but their heart cannot be heard from even ten feet away!

A fun fact is that the tiniest seabird in the world, a Cassins Auklet has the same diet as the the largest animal in the world. Both eat the same food: a tiny shrimp-like crustacean called krill. Blue Whales have a series of rods and plates called baleen (in place of teeth). Instead of chewing their food they strain krill from the water and swallow them whole - more than three tons every day.

Blue Whales have been known to interbreed occasionally with the second largest animal on earth, the Fin Whale. Four of these hybrids have been scientifically documented by DNA analysis.

Blue Whales are thought to be solitary or perhaps associate with one other individual. It is not known whether Blue Whale pairs stay together over long periods of time. Where there are high concentrations of food as many as 50 Blue Whales have seen in one area, although this is exceptional because they do not normally form the large close-knit groups seen in other baleen whale species.

Blue Whales are fast, strong swimmers with an average speed of about 12 miles per hour with an ability when alarmed to move at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour.

Blue Whales are known to inhabit oceans all over the world. They are especially attracted to Pacific Ocean waters off California and Mexico which can host up to 30% of the worlds entire population during the warmer spring and summer months due to the excellent supply of food.

Blue Whales are found all over the world in both cold and warm waters. Its not known for certain where they breed and give birth, but is suspected to be in warmer waters. Feeding has been documented in temperate, tropical and polar waters.

In the 1800’s there were hundreds of thousands of Blue Whales all over the world. Then man developed weapons such as guns and exploding harpoons an proceeded to nearly eliminate these wonderful animals in the early twentieth century. Blue Whales were hunted mercilessly for 40 years until they were nearly extinct. Protection began in 1966 and their population is slowly recovering with perhaps 6,000 to 8,000 Blue Whales left worldwide today.

Terry Hunefeld retired from a CEO career in 2007 to pursue his passion of sailing the ocean to observe birds and marine mammals. He and his wife Ann own the lovely Inn at Moonlight Beach on the Pacific Coast of San Diego. A Surf Town That Time Forgot - Encinitas

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Encinitas is a lovely beach town along the Pacific Ocean just north of San Diego. There are other cute towns with lodging along the coast like the Carlsbad Inn and Solana Beach Hotels, but Encinitas is special, quite different from other beach towns in San Diego county because it is lost in time locked in the 1960s which is why a national magazine called it “SoCal’s Last Sleepy Surf Town.”

Encinitas is home to romantic bed and breakfasts, Stone Steps Beach, The Roxy Restaurant where you can buy a glass of rum and an ice cream cone, cute boutiques, funky old hotels on the historic Pacific Coast Highway, Moonlight beach, the La Paloma theater (still featuring weekly surf movies) and romantic Encinitas bed and breakfasts. Encinitas is so laid back that it is often referred to as “San Diego’s Sleepy Surf Town.”

Business people and surfers alike stand in line in front of Roberto’s Taco Shop every day. The sidewalks along the Pacific Coast Highway (U.S. 101) in “downtown” are lined with outdoor restaurants and funky shops. Talk about laid back - tourists and kids can be seen any day walking barefoot through Encinitas in swim suits. You will find surfers from 5 states waxing down their surfboards (just like the Beach Boy’s sang in Surfin’ U.S.A.) for a session at Swami’s Surf Beach before they return to their Encinitas Bed and Breakfast or Carlsbad Inn.

Moonlight Beach has the best of San Diego beaches and is an easy walk from the Inn At Moonlight Beach Bed and Breakfast Inn. It’s a great spot to soak up some sun, enjoy a game of pickup volleyball, have a picnic or cookout at the big fire-rings, try your hand at surfing or boogie-boarding, body surf, read a book, people watch or just kick back and “chill.” You won’t find a better beach in Encinitas to work on your tan.

Ann Dunham is the hostess of the romantic Encinitas B&B (Bed and Breakfast) called the Inn At Moonlight Beach. This lovely boutique inn is far more intimate than a Del Mar B&B or Encinitas hotel. The inn is situated on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Moonlight Beach and is often called the San Diego Beach Bed and Breakfast, said to be more romantic than Del Mar Hotels and more lovely than the Carlsbad Bed and Breakfasts.

The Inn At Moonlight Beach has only 4 rooms, each decorated like an Italian seaside hotel. All the rooms have a refrigerator and free wi-fi. There are boogie boards and beach umbrellas waiting for you to hit the beach and ride the waves. What makes this Encinitas bed & breakfast really special is that Ann bakes her own pastries for you each morning.

Terry Hunefeld retired as CEO of a San Diego training corporation to follow his love of exploring the ocean to monitor birds, dolphins and whales. Hunefeld and his wife Ann Dunham own the Inn At Moonlight Beach in Encinitas near Del Mar and San Diego. For more information visit: Solana Beach Bed and Breakfasts or Carlsbad B&B.

Getting Into Sac

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

It should come as no surprise that the Golden State is shot-through with big cities. From San Francisco to Los Angeles to Newport Beach and back up the coast again, there are no shortages of big cities to choose from. To be sure, smaller college towns like Berkeley, Davis, and Irvine also get folded into the Golden State batter. With all of these options, what makes Sacramento the capitol?

Sacramento was little more than a trading post when John Sutter arrived in 1839 from Switzerland. Within ten years he and his heirs would guide the transformation of the trading post into a military barracks for the U.S. Army and eventually into an incorporated city. Sacramento is the oldest incorporated city in the state, having been invested in 1850. This does not mean it is the oldest, however, as that distinction belongs to Monterey.

With the defeat of the Mexican army in 1848, the capital of California was moved from Monterey. The first city to be designated the new capitol was San Jose. When the state legislature met there in 1850, it was argued the capitol should be moved further inland to avoid retribution either from Mexico or the Spanish Empire.

Two years earlier, James Marshall famously discovered gold in the American River in Coloma, about 50 miles away from Sacramento. In the years that followed, Sacramento became the inheritor of the California Gold Rush. The city flooded with new residents and economic prosperity. As evidence of Sacramentos growing importance, the Transcontinental Railroad terminated in the city, solidifying it stature as the gateway city to California.

With brief stints in Vallejo and Benicia, the capitol was moved, finally, to Sacramento in 1854. Taking advantage of the citys tremendous infrastructure and rail access, the Constitutional Convention named Sacramento the permanent capitol of California in 1879. Inspired by the nations capitol, the California State Capitol was not actually completed until 1874, where it stands to this day in tribute to the vision and foresight of John Sutter.
