How To Install Water Filters

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Everyone would like to have clean, clear drinking water. Water that is free of the impurities collected along the path from water catchment to kitchen faucet tastes better. Installing water filters is not as difficult an undertaking as you may think.

Different filter cartridges are available to filter different levels and types of contaminants in your water. You should choose the cartridge that is right for your area. The hardest part of the job is taking the time to read all the instructions first so this choice is correctly made.

Look under your sink to find the best place to locate the apparatus. You will want to make sure it is out of the way so you can access pipes when necessary. But, as you will need to change the cartridges it must be accessible too. Hold the unit in place and using a pencil mark the spots where the screws will go.

Gather some basic tools so you will have what you need to install the filter unit. An adjustable wrench or wrench of a size that matches your plumbing fittings will be needed. This will be used to undo plumbing fittings and do them up again when the filtration unit has been attached. A drill and screwdriver are all that are needed to mount the unit under the sink.

Drill the holes in the wall where you have marked it using the correct size drill bit for the screws. Different models of filtration systems will have different numbers of screws to attach them but they will all provide the screws needed. Hold the unit in place and attach the screws to the wall. Check that it is mounted solidly.

The filter works on the cold water flow and this will need to be turned off. Some homes have a shut off valve under the sink. If you don’t have one of these you will need to turn the water off at the meter where it flows into your property. Once the water is turned off allow excess water in the pipes to drain by turning on the faucet.

When the water is turned off and the lines drained disconnect the flexible hose that connects to the PVC pipe under your sink. There may be some water still left in the line so place a hand towel underneath to soak up any spills. Attach the hose to the filtration unit and then attach the flexible hose that comes with it to the PVC pipe.

Check the lines to make sure that you have connected them properly. You should be able to trace the line of hose from its entry to the cupboard through the unit and then on to the pipe that connects to your faucet. Turn the water flow back on and check for leaks. If there are none turn the faucet on and allow the water to run. There may be some discoloration from sediment at first but this will clear quickly.

Your family will love the clean, fresh water that flows from your kitchen tap. To keep it this way be sure to change the filter cartridges according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Installing water filters is a quick and easy task that anyone can do.

Water Filters, What You Should Know About Using Them

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

The purpose of water filters are to remove any impurities that are present in water. The device does this by means of a biological process, a chemical process, ion exchanges, sieving, absorption, or a barrier with microscopic openings in it. A singular advantage to the use of a filter is that it is able to remove particles that can get through meshes with wider openings. The uses to which the cleansed water is put are many. For instance there are some who use it for swimming pools, irrigation, in aquariums, and for drinking.

Choosing a water filter then is not as simple as one might think. Because of the many types of filters available, type of water that comes from your tap, and the types of contaminants that are in the water. Not all types of filters are effective in any given circumstance. Thus a review of the types of filters that are available should be helpful in making the best decision.

The charcoal filter is considered to be the most common. Its most active ingredient, charcoal, most often comes from coconut husks. The filter, or cartridge, is filled with the charcoal in order absorb impurities as the water passes through it. Its popularity stems from the fact that this type of filter can be installed quite easily, is less expensive, and is able to filter out many of the common impurities that are found in our water.

Another filter that is popular is a magnetic filter. Water passes through a magnetic field which rearranges the ions. Some debate the effectiveness of this type of filter as they believe that since this process does not actually split the ion that any real and lasting change is minimal.

A true ion filter purifies water by ionizing the water. The water has been altered electronically through the use of positive and negative electrodes. What happens next is that the water and the minerals that it contains are separated into two types of water. They are alkaline water and acidic water. The alkaline water is used primarily for drinking as it is known for removing toxins from the body. The acidic water is good for killing bacteria and is most often used for bathing in.

A third popular choice in filtration mechanisms it the reverse osmosis filter. It works by using a very fine membrane that filters out the impurities through an osmotic process. In fact the process takes everything out, including some things that are considered good for you, which leaves the water entirely pure. These filters are less common as they require that a professional serviceman come out to change the membrane periodically.

Another way that water has been filtered is through ultraviolet light. It eliminates the bacteria present in most sources of water. The most common settings for the use of this type of filtration systems is in hospitals or business. Cost of maintenance is expensive because trained professionals are needed to keep one of these units functioning properly. Which is why it is seldom seen in use in a home.

Water filters are available in a variety of different models. Each are usually effective in the circumstances they have been designed for. Thus not every filter is right for any setting. Do your research then and discover the best one for at home, or at your place of business.

Why You Should Use Water Filters

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Have you ever gotten a glass of water from the tap and have it taste like lead? It’s not very tasty and there’s an easy fix to get rid of that situation. Water filters are economical, easy-to-install options that are reasonably priced and diverse in the benefits they offer.

Many varieties are on the market today with choices of under sink filters to whole-house systems. There are also models that install immediately under the faucets and counter top choices, with filter types such as charcoal, UV and ceramic. Other choices are ionized, reverse osmosis and magnetic as filtration types.

The health benefits of filters number quite numerous and they begin doing so by removing lead and other dangerous substances from our drinking water. This creates better tasting and smelling water, and keeps our organs from being taken over by harmful chemicals. Since water filters are our last line of defense before ingestion, it keeps our children and families safe from any possible harm due to toxic substances.

The service that they provide is invaluable, so the prices are actually very reasonable. The smaller types, the pitcher filters, begin at an amount of $25.00. The larger types, the whole-house systems, have a price range of approximately $140.00 to $580.00. Certainly, the faucet fixtures and counter top models are easier to install, but they may also need to have their filters changed or cleaned more often as well.

When making your final choice for purchase, you will want to choose one that is most space efficient for your home. Since it’s not going to be something that is moved around often, you will want to make sure that the dedicated space will always be available for that item. Checking and cleaning the filter is something that should be done on a regular schedule, and will be a key part of your home filtration system.

So what happens when you go camping or out of town somewhere, and you don’t have your water system available? The Internet is a great source of information and can give you instructions on just about anything you like. There is a very simple process you can use to make your own filtration system with only a few ingredients.

These simple ingredients include a plastic soda bottle, sand or gravel, and some dirty water. Experimenting with materials may create a better or worse homemade filter; you may want to try using cotton balls to see if the water comes out cleaner. After pouring your dirty water through the materials layered in the top half of the bottle, you will see the results of your efforts in the bottom half of the soda bottle.

Using water filters can prevent disease and provide better tasting and smelling water all around, and in general are something we should use on a regular basis. With the pollution problems that abound in most areas, it is a comfort to know that you are giving your family something safe and clean to drink, especially something as important and necessary as drinking water. Keep one with you at all times and you will see a difference in your health, as well as have something cool and refreshing to share with your friends!

Caravan Holidays Are Cool Again

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Caravan holidays are more popular with all types of holidaymaker than ever these days - from young socialites to those who frequent Glastonbury every year right through to those with young families to those who want to holiday in the UK.

Taking a caravan holiday means you can go away whenever you want to go away and gives you the ability to control your purse strings more effectively - which means more spending money for you!

Caravanning is now so cool that festival goers are using them. You can visit historical sites, the beach, the woods and the countryside easily with a caravan.

Caravan holidays let you take care of your own meals. If the weather is right you can barbeque and make the most of the sun. If it is colder you can cook up a full roast dinner or a warming stew or curry. Caravanning is becoming popular because you can just get up and go. Everything is packed, so all you need to do is to book your pitch and go. If you are really spontaneous you can put a pin in the map and head to that spot, calling sites for pitches as you go.

You can simply hook your caravan up and take off wherever and whenever the fancy takes you.

Whether you have planned to take a break or just fancy going away for the weekend, having access to a caravan enables you to set off when it suits you. Another part of the caravans appeal lies in the fact you do not have to book in advance. You can avoid the hassle of airport queues, checking in and getting through security.

Caravans are increasingly viewed as an environmentally friendly way to holiday as the carbon emissions are minimal when compared to air travel. Caravan safety is something that you need to be aware of. Knowing the rules of the road when taking a caravan holiday is important. There are several restrictions when towing. For example, you should not exceed an 85% caravan to car weight ratio, so when your caravan is fully loaded it should not be more than 85% of your cars kerb-weight, or maximum tow weight if this is lower.

You need additional lights and reflectors for night time driving. Additional mirrors to help with manoeuvring are essential too. The maximum speed for a car towing a caravan is 60mph on motorways and dual carriageways. For other roads it is 50mph, unless a lower speed limit is in force at the time.

Caravan insurance is essential for both static and touring caravans. Find insurance that offers protection against theft, accidental damage, fire, and flooding and storm damage.

The 5 Top Things To Do In New York City

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

New York City, one of the most fascinating places on earth, offers a wide range of activities and adventures for everyone. Even if you’re lucky enough to visit New York more than a few times, you still won’t even come close to seeing all the secrets the city has to offer. Deciding exactly where to go and what to do is definitely a fun process, but it can also be a bit overwhelming, especially if you’ve never been to the city before. Here is a summary of the 5 top things to do in New York City:

1. Lady Liberty and Ellis Island

The ever unique and widely diverse history of our country can be found at Ellis Island, where years ago so many of our ancestors set foot on American soil for the very first time looking for freedom and prosperity. If you’re a genealogy buff, look through the registry for names of relatives who may have stepped off a boat here before heading on to visit the Statue of Liberty, fondly known as Lady Liberty. If you’ve never seen the statue in person, she is definitely a sight to behold with her strong, majestic presence and watchful eyes overlooking the ocean. To visit Ellis Island from the city, or from New Jersey, take a ferry for $12, which also goes to Liberty Island where the statue is situated. Tickets often sell out, so buy yours early if at all possible, either online or from the site where the ferry departs. You can also tour the crown of the statue, but this might entail an extra cost. These tickets sell out fast as well, so reserve them quickly.

2. Exciting Times Square

Unless you’re intent on buying souvenirs, it won’t cost you a thing to explore exciting Times Square, one of the most visited spots in New York City, where the country watches the ball drop every New Year’s Eve. Pay a visit to the tourist center located on 7th Avenue near 46th Street for information about where to dine, the best places to shop, and of course, for buying tickets to any of the Broadway shows.

3. Gorgeous Central Park

Central Park is a favorite place of many a native New Yorker as well as those who visit the expansive park to experience its many wonders. The park is free to visit, except for the giant carousel and the Central Park Zoo, and one of the most beloved places in the whole wooded area is Strawberry Fields, a monument in honor of the late and great John Lennon. Situated across from the Dakota, the New York apartment where Lennon was gunned down, the site consists of a stone circle with the words “Imagine,” the title of one of his most recognizable hits. Prepare to spend an entire day in Central Park exploring New York City’s most beautiful spots.

4. Ellen’s Stardust Diner

Ellen’s Stardust Diner is a 50’s diner style restaurant. It’s not far from Times Square, on Broadway and 51st Street. The waiters and waitresses all sing Broadway show tunes and songs from musicals. It’s very entertaining. Quite a few performers on Broadway today have gotten their start at Ellen’s. It’s a great place for children and adults. If you sit in the upper seating area, you get a really great view of the entire dining area. The food is delicious. A tad bit on the pricey side, but not completely unreasonable. The line is usually pretty long, so again plan accordingly. No reservations are needed.

5. The Empire State Building

And finally, be sure to see New York’s tallest building, the Empire State Building, with its spectacular, breathtaking views. This famous building has appeared in many classic films including King Kong. Venture to the top of the building where there are binoculars for tourists to use at look-out points that provide a panoramic vista of all the surrounding states. The lights atop the Empire State Building are changed according to season or holiday. They are red and green during Christmas time. Admission to the building is $19 for adults and patrons with a military ID will receive a two dollar discount. Entertainment and coupon books as well as AAA also often have discounts on tickets for the Empire State Building, which is visited by literally thousands of people each day.

In the city that truly never sleeps, there are so many different things to see and do, but hopefully, this list will give you a few ideas to narrow down your quest for some of New York City’s best attractions. Enjoy yourself while exploring this glorious city!

Doolin Hotels, Restaurants And Pub Menus - Four Recommend Places For Seafood Lovers

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

The days when the perception of Irish cuisine consisting purely of potatoes can now be finally put to rest. Any visitor to Ireland’s main cities will of course be aware of the numerous bars, cafes and slew of dining options covering every conceivable type of cuisine on the planet.

What will surprise many tourists is the rise in good quality dining out options in the smaller villages around Ireland. While the capital city & larger towns have the volume of customers to warrant better menus, it is the smaller villages that have better access to high quality local produce in seafood, vegetables, herbs and meat products.

One town of particular note, in gastronomic terms, is Doolin in the west of Ireland. For many years, visitors were only in Doolin for the traditional music sessions or to get the ferry over to the Aran Islands. But nowadays, Doolin hotels, pubs and restaurant are raising the standard of dining for the entire region.

For seafood lovers, Cullinan’s Guesthouse and Restaurant in the village provides a memorable dining experience with a great selection of dishes making the most of the locally caught seafood. The service is professional and the owners have added some special touches, such as choosing dessert wines to complement your desserts, which you would not find in many restaurants of the region.

For those who enjoy fine dining in historic buildings with sea views then the Ballinalacken Castle just outside of town will probably be a highlight of any visit to Ireland. This 15th century castle has its own hotel restaurant with views across the sea to the larger town of Galway. The menu makes the best use of prawns, scallops and salmon from the Atlantic in classic French cuisine dishes. Carnivores will be happy to hear that the menu also provides exceptional lamb and organic beef dishes.

If you are unsure of what type of dining option you and the family wish to take then a visit to the Aran View House Hotel just north of Doolin village has plenty of options. The completely informal option is to take the bar menu and enjoy the views out to the Aran Islands. Note this is a hotel bar so is definitely family friendly. The adjoining restaurant also caters for standard and a-la-carte dining options for a proper sit down dinner.

Any visitor to Doolin should not however miss out on hearing some of the best traditional music sessions that this town is famous for. The best places to experience this is in the two main bars on the main street, McGann’s and O’Connor’s pubs. Both also provide regular hearty pub fare with the local seafood chowder being a firm favorite along with the obligator Irish stew.

So you see, the variety of dining options in this Irish village can prove to be a welcome surprise for exhausted visitors following the traditional tourist trail along the west coast of Ireland and goes to prove Ireland’s burgeoning gastronomic skills are not merely limited to the capital and larger towns.
